Hey who knows how powerful the mind is? This piece of equipment that nature gave us free and clear has intrigued me for some time now. I come across some good work by Jeremy Bennett and I learnt a lot about the mind.

It is estimated that the mind can perform ten quadrillion operations per second without you even knowing it. Unconscious operations like making your blood flow throughout your veins with the perfect amount of pressure to keep you alive is just a wonder. What’s making your heart beat right now? Are you consciously commanding your heart to beat right now? No! What’s maintaining your body temperature to the perfect degree to keep you alive? What’s doing the six trillion things to your sixty trillion cells every single second? It’s something called your subconscious mind. It’s the powerhouse to who you are. All of us have it.

The subconscious mind can’t distinguish between a real event and something you merely think about. Now that’s fortunately to some and unfortunately to others. That fact can help the fortunate attract good things into their life while unfortunately to others it can absolutely demolish their lives and health.

Come to think about it; what happens when you have a nightmare? You wake up, your heart is pounding, you’re sweating and you’re anxious beyond words. The nightmare existed in your mind, you weren’t in any real danger at all but your mind didn’t know that. You physiologically reacted as if the nightmare was actually taking place in reality.

Studies after studies have concluded that we may be using very small percentage of our mind in relation to its potential. For example there was a study conducted where a doctor hooked up an elite athlete, a professional skier to a device that measured the athlete’s muscle fibers. He told the skier to merely think about skiing down the hill without moving a muscle. The act of thinking about skiing down the hill actually made the same muscle fibers that would have actually fired off if he would have been actually skiing fire off from thoughts. What an incredible result?

This power of our mind has been demonstrated time after time with the placebo effect. Placebo is any treatment or procedure that is devoid of specific activities on the patient’s system that can cause an effect on the patient. It is prescribed for the psychological benefit to the patient. It works as a result of the patient’s belief in that treatment. Researchers are suggesting that a minimum of one third of all medical treatment including surgery is due to the belief that the treatment is going to work. A belief about a treatment seems to have a significant effect on the person. This equipment called the mind is powerful use it wisely.

On the other end of the spectrum, if the mind is used to believe that one is going to develop a disease, actually causes an individual to experience the symptoms of it. This phenomenon is called nocebo effect. It is a negative effect on health produced by psychological or psychosomatic factors such as negative expectations of treatment or prognosis.

Whatever believe you hold in your consciously will be turned into reality by your subconscious mind. You as an individual has no reality other than that you hold in your mind. The same principle is used by hypnotist. A hypnotist implants an idea in the back of their subject’s mind and the subject experiences whatever they hold there.

Free will as we understand it, is practically an illusion. In fact 2-4 % of the time you decide what you want to do. 98 to 96% of the times you’re not aware. Your subconscious mind controls your decisions. Everything we crave, desire and act upon comes from what we hold predominantly from our subconscious minds.

So if what you hold at the back of your subconscious mind shapes your reality what shapes your subconscious mind? Practically everything that you are exposed to. Everything that you see, hear, smell, taste and feel is shaping your subconscious mind.

All of these extremely gruesome and graphical scenes are sinking back into the minds. Those are the most important developmental years of the child.

Every single word or thought you hold in your mind has a particular vibration frequency. Negative words or intentions have slower vibration frequencies while positive words have higher vibration frequencies.

For example; what happens when you gossip? In order for you to gossip you have to hold a negative memory and a negative thought inside of your mind. You will not only think about that negative memory, you share it with the other person that you’re talking to. The moment you hold negative thoughts in your mind, the biochemistry of your brain changes and you release cortisol (the stress hormone) into your blood. It weakens your immune system, inhibits the actions of your White Blood Cells, increases the chances of infection and even promotes weight gain. All from gossiping, all from your thinking. You can’t gossip without hurting yourself. That’s crucial to remember.

Of all the things you can expose yourself to, there is nothing more important than the thought you hold in your mind. Since we have very little control over the thoughts that come into our mind, it is very important we control the thoughts that we dwell on. It is estimate that we have an average 60 000 thoughts a day. The reality is not only are these thoughts the same thoughts we had yesterday, but majority of them are negative thoughts. It is either you’re dwelling on something bad in the past or fearing something that could potentially happen in the future.

These negative thoughts cause us to release cortisol the stress hormone into our blood. Most people believe that situations cause them anxiety, stress or be depressed. The reality is there’s absolutely no situation in the entire universe that can cause someone to experience anxiety. It’s your psychological reaction to the situation that can cause you to experience anxiety not the situation itself. This is crucial to understand.

In a situation like sky diving for example, one person may sky dive and their brain releases endorphin (the good feeling hormones) into their blood while another person doing the same thing will release cortisol. It’s the same situation. It’s because it’s never the situation that causes anyone to experience anxiety but the reaction to it. You create your anxiety not the situation. When you truly and fundamentally understand this truth, that’s when you realize that you control your anxiety not the situation. It’s one of the most liberating feelings you can ever experience.
